" We contacted Bruce with a difficult brief – to design a garden, swimming pool, terrace and pergola for our farmhouse in a windswept, arid part of southern Spain. It was important to us that, as well as withstanding the elements, the garden should be sympathetic to the surrounding landscape (steep hills of olives and almonds) and the simple architecture of the house. Bruce impressed us not only with his design flair for both planting and landscaping but with his friendliness, enthusiasm, empathy and patience. Four years on, it’s hard to imagine that our beautiful, shady, semi-mature garden was once a barren outcrop of rock .."

The Design for a garden and swimming pool in the Andalucian Hills. The house is located in one of the harshest "gardening " locations in Europe. Extremely limited rain meant the design needed to incorporate subterranean water reservoirs. Because of these conditions, the plant palette was limited to the few choices that may or may not survive not only the extreme summer heat and limited water but also - just to increase the challenge - the garden is situated in a winter frost pocket !
